Don’t Become a Victim of Fraud

Dear Watch Member,

The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau has published its annual assessment covering 2022-23 and its findings include:

  • Phishing emails continue to be the most common way frauds are started
  • Hacking (Social media and email) is the top cyber crime type
  • Online Shopping and Auction Fraud is the top fraud type, which means people are buying goods that possibly don’t exist.
  • Courier Fraud reports are DOWN but losses have INCREASED by 96%.

Across London we know residents are still being conned through telephone and online frauds, and the fraudsters can be persuasive, and manipulative.

If you receive a telephone call or email to say you are entitled to compensation, or you could help with a Police situation relating to your bank account, or your broadband / energy company / phone provider is giving you money back – it’s likely to be the start of a fraud as the criminal will try to hook you with something that seems too good to be true. Any reputable company you do business with would have your postal address and would send you a letter about any money owing to you – they really wouldn’t phone, text or email you.

If you, or a family member or friend has been a victim, please report to the Metropolitan Police by ringing 101 or online via www.met.police.uk/ro/report/fo/v1/fraud/.

Please forward any suspicious texts to Action Fraud at 7726 (spells SPAM on your keypad). Please report scams and attempted scams to Action Fraud.

Final Concert in the Park.

A huge thank you must go to all of our wonderful volunteers that have helped over the last four weeks. These concerts wouldn’t happen without their help.

Simply Gray got people dancing this afternoon. Even a temporary power outage didn’t stop the fun. ( No I wasn’t having a crafty cuppa).

Thank to everyone who came and braved the weather when Harrow Steel played.

It’s an honour to be able to hold such wonderful community events in Pinner.

FREE* National Trading Standards Call Blockers Available

Dear Watch Member,

The National Trading Standards (NTS) Scams Team has secured funding to provide a limited number of free* call blocking units to help protect people in receipt of scam and nuisance phone calls on their landline phone.

You can apply on behalf of someone else with their consent, or you can apply for yourself.

What Is A Call Blocker?

The call blocking units available are trueCall Secure+. A call blocker is a unit that filters unwanted scam and nuisance phone calls from a landline phone (this unit does not work with mobile phones).

In previous call blocker projects run by the NTS Scams Team, these units have blocked 91% of scam and nuisance calls.

The unit plugs into an existing landline phone and phone line, it can work alongside broadband and/or lifeline/pendant devices that are already installed.

Final Concert of the Season – 20th August 23 @ 2:30pm

Simply Gray will be playing at our final concert of the season in the Pinner Memorial Park at 2:30pm on Sunday 20th August.

The football will have finished by then!

There will be a cash bucket collection to help offset the cost of the concerts.

Bring chairs and a picnic.

There will be no chair hire.

Cuppa with a Copper – Cafe Amici

Dear Watch Member,

Our next Cuppa with a Copper contact point will be held on Wednesday 16th August at Cafe Amici.

You can have an informal discussion with a local officer regarding any concerns you have about anti-social behaviour and criminal activity in Pinner.

We will have plenty of crime prevention advice to give you, and maybe even some freebies too.

So come and join us, and support a local independent business at the same time.

Concert in the Park – 13 August 2:30pm

We are looking forward to welcoming Stardut Big Band to Pinner Memorial Park at 2:30pm on Sunday 13 August.

There will be a cash bucket collection to help offset the cost of the concerts.

There will be no chair hire.

We are looking forward to seeing you there.

Bridge Street gardens – Bridge Repair Update.

I have received this information from Cllr Baxter.

My specialist repairer, Grahame, and I went to do a detailed inspection of the Bridge Street Bridge on the 6th July, to ascertain the level of repair required to reopen.

 Grahame found several areas of rot within the main, load-bearing beams. However, these are very large hardwood beams and the rot has not gone right through.

 There was also rot in the hand-rails and side stanchions. The wood has also split around a number of the bolt holes.

 There is also rot within the surface planks. All of this makes the bridge currently unsafe and unusable.

 However, despite its poor state, Grahame is confident that he can carry out sufficient repairs to give this structure another 5 years or so lifespan, until it needs further inspection and repair/replacement.

 This will include: 

        • Replacement of secondary supports
        • Replacement of side stanchions which have rotted and split. Addition of metal bracket where required.
        • Reconfiguration and installation of supporting beams.
        • Relay surface planks crossways (not longways as at the moment), using ‘anti-slip’ boards to make it safer for foot traffic when wet. This will negate the need it future for roofing felt, which will let the wood air out and naturally dry out, helping to prevent further rot.

 Cost: and initial estimate from Grahame is that materials will cost approx. £500 -£600. His time on top of that, not known.

 Timescales: With Grahame’s heavy workload currently, he proposes starting the repairs late July/early August.

 Resources/staffing: Grahame cannot carry out this work alone, due to the nature of the area – working at heights and near water. I will try to offer my help where possible. Otherwise we will have to provide a GM Specialist to assist him, and this may mean being carried out outside of the normal working week for availability of staff. There may also be a need for some specialist fittings and equipment to purchase.

 I hope this gives you a full picture of the project, about the continued closure.”

Concert In The Park – 6 August – Paparazzi

What ever the weather throws at us this weekend (unless it’s extremely windy or a thunder and lightening storm); Paparazzi will be returning to play at our “Concert in the Park” season.

Bring a chair and a picnic and join us on Sunday in Pinner memorial Park at 2:30pm.

There will be a cash bucket collection to help offset some of the cost of holding these events.
