Harrow Choral Society’s Summer Concert

1 July 2023 @ 19:30 - 22:00

£16

Sacred Music for a Summer Evening

Preparations are underway for Harrow Choral Society’s Summer Concert on Saturday 1st July at St Alban’s Church, North Harrow.  Fresh from their successful performance of Haydn’s Creation at Harrow Arts Centre in March, the choir will sing a programme of sacred music spanning the Baroque to the Romantic period under the baton of Music Director Sam Evans.

Francesco Durante’s lively setting of the Magnificat was once attributed to Pergolesi but has now been restored to its rightful composer, an Italian contemporary of Bach and Handel. There are three works by Austrian composers:  the Little Organ Mass St Joannis de Deo is a wonderful distillation of Haydn’s sparkling style and, in contrast but also from the Classical period, Mozart’s sublime motet, Ave Verum Corpus, is well-known for its serene beauty.  Moving into the early Romantic era, Schubert’s Mass in G is a short setting of the liturgy in his characteristically melodious and expressive style.

“This music is very rewarding to sing,” says HCS Chair Margaret Davies, “Each piece has its own distinctive character but all are wonderfully tuneful. Tickets can be purchased online through the choir’s website at www.harrowchoral.org.uk, by email at [email protected] or by phoning 07794 253463.
